The Principality of Asturias is a true Natural Paradise where the mountains and the sea blend together in perfect harmony.
But it is not just the landscape. Its historical and artistic heritage are also magnificent: it ranges from important prehistoric sites until now, its early settlements (castros), Roman remains, Pre-romanesque architecture which is unique in the world and worthy examples of all artistic periods. It is here where we find the origin of Saint James’ Way. Alfonso II el Casto (791-842) travelled to the Galician lands and founded the first temple dedicated to the Apostle. Oviedo was an obligatory place to stop for the pilgrims because its cathedral was and still is the guardian of important relics kept mainly in the Holy Chamber.
The Asturian ethnographic heritage is very wide: the typical granaries on stilts (four stilts), paneras (six stilts), mills and hard-working craftsmen who make all kinds of baskets, bagpipes, clogs and even jewellery made out of jet.
Its exquisite gastronomy deserves a special mention. This includes fabada ( butter-bean stew) or pote (kale stew), different meat specialities or sea food and we mustn’t forget its most famous dessert: rice pudding. There is no other region of Europe with such a wide variety of cheeses. Perhaps the best known is Cabrales cheese (a blue cheese).
But, undoubtedly, Asturias’ singularity can be summed up with its cider. Drinking cider is a real ritual.
All this wealthy cultural heritage is present in the network of museums throughout Asturias.
